It is the city where flamenco was born, where Columbus departed for the Americas and returned in triumph, where three of the world's great religious traditions left their architecture side by side in the streets of the old city, and where the Real Alcázar, the extraordinary Moorish palace complex still used by the Spanish royal family, stands as one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe. Students explore the cathedral and its Giralda tower (the minaret of the mosque that stood on this site before the Reconquista), descend into the underground Roman city of Itálica just outside the city, experience a live flamenco performance in the intimate Triana neighbourhood where the art form has its deepest roots, and navigate the Santa Cruz quarter's labyrinthine lanes on foot. Spanish is everywhere, in the tapas bars, in the market, in the conversations students overhear on the tram, and the city's warmth and openness make it one of the most rewarding language immersion destinations in the portfolio.

A day by day

Day 1

Arrival & Santa Cruz Quarter Arrive in Seville and make your way to the accommodation. After check-in, the afternoon is given over to a first guided walk through the Santa Cruz Quarter, the former Jewish district of the medieval city, a labyrinth of whitewashed lanes, orange trees, and hidden patios that is one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods in Spain. The exterior of the cathedral and the Giralda tower frame the walk before a group dinner at a traditional Andalusian restaurant in the old city.

Day 2

The Cathedral, the Giralda & the Real Alcázar A full morning at the heart of Seville's historic city. The Cathedral of Seville, the world's largest Gothic cathedral, housing the tomb of Christopher Columbus, is explored with a guide who connects the building's extraordinary scale to the religious and political ambitions of the Reconquista. The Giralda tower is climbed on foot via its famous ramp (no stairs, it was designed so the muezzin could ride a horse to the top), with views across the city. After lunch, the group enters the Real Alcázar for a guided visit, the Mudéjar palace rooms, the gardens, and the extraordinary interplay of Islamic, Christian, and Gothic architecture across a complex that has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. Evening dinner in the Triana neighbourhood.

Day 3

Triana, Flamenco & the Guadalquivir A morning in Triana, Seville's traditional working-class neighbourhood on the west bank of the Guadalquivir, home to the city's ceramic tradition, its bullfighting heritage, and the deepest roots of flamenco. A visit to the Castillo de San Jorge (built on the site of the Inquisition's Seville headquarters, now a museum) connects to the History curriculum before the group crosses back to the old city for free time and lunch. In the afternoon, a guided visit to the Plaza de España, the extraordinary semicircular building constructed for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, one of the most photogenic spaces in Spain, and the María Luisa Park. The evening brings a live flamenco performance in an intimate Triana venue, guitar, cante jondo, and dance in the neighbourhood where the art form was born.

Day 4

Itálica & Free Afternoon A morning coach excursion to Itálica, just outside Seville, the Roman city founded in 206 BC and birthplace of two Roman emperors (Trajan and Hadrian). One of the best-preserved Roman sites in Spain, with an extraordinary amphitheatre and extensive mosaic floors, it adds a classical dimension to the programme that complements the Islamic and Christian layers of the city itself. Return to Seville for a free afternoon, students navigate the city independently in small supervised groups, visiting the Mercado de Triana or exploring the Alameda de Hércules. Group farewell dinner.

Day 5

Departure Breakfast and departure. The return journey can incorporate a stop in Córdoba for groups doing a combined Seville & Córdoba itinerary.
