Granada and Córdoba together form one of the most curriculum-rich itineraries available anywhere in Spain, two cities, four days, and a depth of architectural and historical encounter that no other combination in Andalucía can match. Granada's Alhambra is simply one of the most extraordinary buildings in the world, a Moorish palace of staggering geometric intricacy and sensory richness, set above a city of whitewashed Albaicín lanes with the Sierra Nevada as its backdrop. Córdoba's Mezquita-Catedral is its equal in a completely different register, a vast forest of striped arches, originally a Roman temple, then the greatest mosque in the western world, and now a cathedral built inside it, every layer of the building's history visible simultaneously. Between them, these two buildings offer a history lesson about the meeting of civilisations that no classroom can replicate. The programme also includes the extraordinary Jewish Quarter of Córdoba, one of the best-preserved medieval Jewish neighbourhoods in Spain, and the Albaicín in Granada, the Moorish residential quarter that UNESCO lists alongside the Alhambra as a World Heritage Site. This is a standalone Andalucía programme, distinct from the Barcelona & Andalucía extended trip, and ideal for groups who want cultural and historical depth without the length and cost of a seven-night itinerary.

A day by day

Day 1

Arrival in Granada & the Albaicín Arrive in Granada and make your way to the accommodation. After check-in, the afternoon opens with a guided walk through the Albaicín quarter, the Moorish residential hill opposite the Alhambra, its whitewashed lanes, Moorish bathhouses, and small mosques connecting the city's medieval Islamic past to the present. The Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset, with the Alhambra lit against the Sierra Nevada, is one of the great views in Spain. Group dinner in the Albaicín.

Day 2

The Alhambra A full day at the Alhambra, a guided morning visit to the Nasrid Palaces (the absolute heart of the complex, the Hall of the Ambassadors, the Court of the Lions, the Hall of the Abencerrages), the Alcazaba fortress, and the Palacio de Carlos V. The Generalife summer palace and gardens fill the early afternoon, with the extraordinary terraced water gardens providing a counterpoint to the architectural intensity of the Nasrid rooms. The visit requires the full day to do justice to the complexity of the site. Group dinner in Granada's cathedral quarter, with time to explore the city centre in the evening.

Day 3

Transfer to Córdoba & the Jewish Quarter Morning coach transfer to Córdoba, the city that was the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate and the most sophisticated city in 10th-century Europe. After check-in, the afternoon is given over to the Jewish Quarter, the medieval neighbourhood of narrow lanes, whitewashed walls, and flower-filled patios that surrounds the Mezquita, including the 14th-century synagogue (one of only three surviving medieval synagogues in Spain), the statue of Maimonides (the great Jewish philosopher born in Córdoba in 1138), and the Zoco artisan market. Group dinner in the old city.

Day 4

The Mezquita-Catedral & Medina Azahara A morning guided visit to the Mezquita-Catedral, two and a half hours minimum to do justice to the building's extraordinary layers of history, from the original Visigothic church through the Great Mosque and the Renaissance cathedral inserted into its heart. The guide connects the architecture to the political and religious history of the Reconquista in a way that makes the building's complexity legible rather than confusing. After lunch, an optional afternoon excursion to Medina Azahara, the ruins of the Umayyad Caliph's palace city just outside Córdoba, partially excavated and offering an extraordinary glimpse of the material culture of 10th-century Al-Andalus. Group farewell dinner in Córdoba.

Day 5

Departure Breakfast and departure. The return journey can pass through Seville for groups combining this programme with a Seville extension.
